CIF City Titles - 2001
Tuesday, June 5, 2001 Los Angeles City Section Champions Top-seeded and favored, the Chancellors won their second title in three years by defeating a tough Roosevelt team, 2-1, in front of 3,536 at Dodger Stadium.
Left-hander Joe Guntz (14-0) struck out 10 and gave up four hits in a duel with hard-throwing right-hander Joram Iboa (8-3). Guntz worked out of trouble in the top of the seventh after two Roosevelt runners reached base with two out. He struck out Francisco Figueroa on a called third strike to end the game. The Chancellors, who finished 31-2, a school season record, took a 1-0 lead on a two-out single to right field by Jared Halpert that scored George Spadier from second base in the first inning. In the fourth inning, pinch-hitter Jon Selman's single to right field drove in Jason Dorninguez from second base for a 2-0 lead. Roosevelt ended Guntz's playoff scoreless streak at 18-2/3 innings when Iboa hit a run-scoring single in the fifth. 2001 City Final Box Score
