The English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) is a parent and community advisory group at each school that has 21 or more English Learners (ELs). Its purpose is to advise the school’s principal, staff, and School Site Council on:
Programs and services for English Learners (ELs)
How to best support student achievement for ELs
Efforts to ensure that parents of ELs are informed and involved
ELAC members:
Review and give input on the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), especially goals for English Learners
Advise on how to spend EL-designated funds
Help evaluate the school’s needs assessment for EL students
Promote parent education and engagement
Elect one member to represent the school at the DELAC (District English Learner Advisory Committee)
Mostly parents of English Learners (must make up at least the same percentage of EL students at the school)
Also includes other interested parents, staff, and community members
It gives parents of English Learners a strong voice in shaping how schools serve their children. ELAC ensures that schools stay accountable to the needs of their multilingual students and families.
