PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Funches' big game leads Chatsworth boys' basketball over Sierra Canyon 62-51 in San Fernando Valley Invitational

It appeared as if Terrell Funches wanted it more.

The Chatsworth senior found a way to get his hands on seemingly every loose ball. Grabbing rebounds inside the paint was all about desire. Scoring crucial baskets happened quite frequently.

Sierra Canyon had no answer for Funches in the first half Friday night. Little changed thereafter as he finished with a game-high 31 points to guide the Chancellors boys' basketball team to a 62-51 first-round victory in the San Fernando Valley Invitational at Crespi High.

"When Terrell is dialed in, he's pretty tough to stop," Chatsworth coach Scott Switalla said. "He played with a lot of intensity tonight, I think everyone would agree on that."

Sierra Canyon junior Jahmel Taylor struggled with his consistency and the Trailblazers (4-3) were not able to recover. He scored 17 points, but only six in the second half.

Similar to the first half, Funches was the Chancellors go-to-guy in the second half. He scored 13 third-quarter points to give Chatsworth a 47-42 advantage.

"I was getting some good looks tonight and was determined to finish up strong," Funches said. "Really, I was just trying to do my part out there and things worked out for me."

Taylor could not seem to find any sort of rhythm after the halftime break. His first basket of the second half came with 1:33 remaining in the third.

"Our goal was to stop Taylor, we talked about it," Switalla said.

Taylor's back-to-back 3-pointers cut the deficit to 24-23 with 2:17 left in the second quarter. He then connected on another long-range 3-pointer to give the Trailblazers a 28-24 lead with 1:03 left in the half.

Surrounded by three Sierra Canyon defenders, Funches hit a leaning jumper in the lane as the halftime buzzer sounded and the teams went into the break tied at 28-28.

Funches had 12 points in the first half to Taylor's 11, as Chatsworth held him scoreless for the first 6:29 of the game.

"Terrell played great tonight," Sierra Canyon coach Ryan Silver said.
