SAN RAPHAEL -- San Fernando Valley basketball powers Crespi and Chatsworth sit just a few miles apart, but as fate would have it they faced off Tuesday night all the way up north in the quarterfinals of the Marin Catholic tournament.
It was not a particularly artistic game – even a bit sloppy for most of the night – but Crespi made the plays when it had to in a 62-41 victory for the Celts' seventh consecutive victory.
Crespi advances to the tournament semifinals Wednesday against an opponent to be determined.
Crespi's Matt Mounier scored 14 points with four rebounds, Christian Johnson added 10 points, and Reggie Coates had eight points and 14 rebounds.
"We need to make cleaner plays with less turnovers tomorrow in the semifinal," Mounier said. "More team focus is needed for all of us."
Chatsworth's Jason Monje and Turrell Funches both scored nine points.
The Celts (10-3) jumped 16-11 lead after the first quarter, and Chatsworth continued to put up a good fight, as the half ended with Crespi ahead 29-23.
In the third quarter, Crespi began asserting itself, stretching the lead to 47-37 before pulling away in the final stanza.
Chatsworth (12-3) entered with 12 wins over the previous 13 games.
