Before the boys basketball season even started at Chatsworth High, expectations were rather high. About two months later, it’s clear the Chancellors are living up to the hype.
Optimism remains as confidence continues to grow.
The Chancellors enter tonight’s nonleague game at Inglewood Morningside with a sense of urgency that has worked well up to this point. And as result, Chatsworth has been able to go out and win 14 of its first 17 games.
“We’re in a good place, a good spot right now, exactly where we want to be,’’ coach Scott Switalla said. “We knew we had a good chance to do well this season, and we’re living up to expectations so far. Now, all we have to do is stay focused.’’
Terrell Funches has been at the forefront of the success, averaging 19 points. The junior, however, hasn’t done it all by himself. Jason Monje has been as consistent as they come and is averaging seven rebounds.
In fact, Switalla has received contributions from a number of different individuals. “We have five guys scoring more than 10 points a game,’’ he said. “As a coach, when you have everyone pitching and doing their job, it makes life a whole lot easier.’’
The Chancellors made things look easy during a two-week stretch in early December when they put together a 10-game winning streak. Oceanside El Camino finally put an end to the run with an 86-74 victory on Dec. 17.
Looking beyond this weekend, Chatsworth has a nonleague game against Lakeview Terrace Community Charter before the West Valley League opener against host Woodland Hills El Camino Real on Wednesday. A showdown with traditional City Section powerhouse Woodland Hills Taft looms the next day and there’s a good chance that plenty will be at stake.
“We have a strong mentality, and if we keep our composure and stay consistent, we think we have a good shot to stay with anyone that we play,’’ Switalla said. “We feel like we continue to take steps in the right direction. We’re excited about the future.’’
