DRAMA A

Course Description

The major purpose of this course is to offer training in fundamental skills of the theater arts, including improvisation techniques, body control, voice, diction, pantomime, creating of character, learning of lines, projection of ideas and emotions, and preparation and acting of scenes from plays.

Acting projects will provide positive group experiences in the cooperative assignments, developing self-discipline, evaluating
another's performance, and accepting constructive criticism. Instruction develops language skills and appreciation through reading dramatic literature; using written critiques; writing character analyses, play reports, and introductions; observing
sensitively; listening critically; and speaking effectively.

Drama AB will stress artistic perception and creative expression. This course meets the Fine Arts requirement if class work requires the student to talk and write with discrimination about the artistic material under study and to undertake relevant outside-of-class research, reading, and writing in addition to performance preparation. These courses fulfill the current "f" requirement of the UC/CSU Subject Area Requirements (and will fulfill the new "f" requirement under VAPA for students entering the university in the fall 2003) .
