The major purpose of these courses is to provide a study of basic patterns of civilization as expressed through literature, history, art, music, law, politics, religion, and philosophy. The content includes a survey of significant developments in the search for order and self-definition within selected cultures from ancient civilizations to the present. Literary and specialized works are examined for the ideas expressed and the artistry in expression. The courses require practice in structured writing and oral discussions and critical and creative responses to reading, art, and music. An interdisciplinary course (English Social Science). This course fulfills the English requirement for graduation
and fulfills the "b" requirement of the UC/CSU Subject Area Requirements.
