AP STUDIO ART DRAWING

Course Description

In this annual course students will expand their knowledge of the visual arts through advanced learning activities in historical, cultural, and aesthetic philosophies. Students will use various mediums to explore traditional and experimental concepts and techniques. They will also be guided in methods of direct observation, problem solving, and critique in order to develop their visual, written, and oral communication skills.
Students in all the advanced courses are given adequate class time to complete a minimum of 12 Breadth Projects (plus plans, studies & sketches), which demonstrate extensiveness (a wide range in the use of materials, techniques & content) and comprehensiveness (exploration, experimentation, inventiveness & expressiveness) in their approach to art issues.
To meet the College Board requirement for the AP Portfolio Exam in May, students enrolled in AP Studio Art-Drawing or 2D Design are required to complete an additional minimum of 12 Area of Concentration (AOC) outside of class. This is an assisted independent study on a unified theme or idea of their choice. AOCs must have a focus, a direction, and a central underlying idea that is visually and conceptually coherent.
