Study Ch. 8 & 9 (photosynthesis and cellular respiration) for exam on Friday.
Cell City project due Thursday!!! See me at lunch for help or answers to questions.

Due:

Assignment

Answer analysis questions using complete sentences.
1. To which organic molecule group does plant pigments belong?
2. What is chromatography?
3. Which pigment was the lightest?  Which pigment was the heaviest?
4. Which pigment is necessary for photosynthesis to occur in plants?
5. Which organelle is cholorphyll found?
6. Some plant leaves contain yellow and red pigments as well as chlorophyll as senn in this lab.  In fall, those leaves may become red or yellow.  What is a possible explanation for those color changes?

Due:

Assignment

Please complete the following questions for Plasmolyzed Cell Lab.
Remember to use complete sentences or you will be marked down.
Analysis
1. Describe the location of chloroplasts in a normal Elodea cell (tap water).
2. Describe the location of chloroplasts in a plasmolyzed cell (6% salt solution).

3.  What other differences did you observe between the normal Elodea cell and the cell in the salt solution?
Conclusion
When tap water was placed on the Elodea leaf, what type of solution would you consider it to be: isotonic, hypertonic, hypotonic?  Why did the chloroplast appear clustered in the center of the cell when salt solution was added?  Which direction did the water molecules diffuse in the when placed in salt solution?  If we placed a drop of 6% starch solution (sugar solution) on the Elodea leaf, what would you predict would happen to the location of the chloroplast? Why?

Due:

Assignment

Homework: Ch 7 Assessment page 197 #1-10.  Copy question and correct answer choice.  I will collect on Wednesday.
Homework (Tues) 11/29: Ch. 7 Test Prep. page199 #1-11.  Copy question and correct answer choice.  Also due Wed.
Study all this week (NP 19-22 & notes) for Ch 7 test on Friday 12/1. (100 points).

Due:

Assignment

Quiz #6 on organelles and their functions (Ch. 7.2 from text). Study NP#19 and review textbook, notes.
Dispatch #5 due Friday

Due:

Assignment

Please complete lab conclusion for tonights homework. Answer the questions using complete and clear sentences. Be sure diagrams of cells are labeled clearly and correctly.
Analysis
1. Describe the shape of the onion, Elodea, and cheek cells observed in the lab. How are they the same? Different?
2. Were you able to recognize the basic cell structures (cell membrane, nucleus, and cytoplasm) for each cell type? Which structures were easy to observe? Easy?
3. What is the purpose of staining the cells?
Conclusion
Restate the purpose of the lab in your own words. Why are cells different shapes and sizes? If you could observe any type of cell, which would it be? Why? What would you expect of the size and shape? Skin cells seem to fit together or overlap. How is this cell arrangement helpful to the organism? If blood cells were box-shaped instead of disc shaped, why would they be difficult to do their job as well?

Due:

Assignment

Work on NP#20-Diffusion & NP#21-Osmosis. They will be collected on Friday 11/17 when I return to school.
Cell Project Proposal due 11/16. Please state what type of human body cell you chose and a brief explanation for chosing the cell. It does not need to be typed. If you are working with a partner, turn in one proposal for the both of you. Be sure both names are listed.

Due:

Assignment

Here is the analyis & conclusion for Organic Compound Lab: Be sure to answer using complete sentence.
Analysis
1. Which test substances contain lipids?
2. Which test substances contain starch?
3. Which test substances contain a single sugar (monosachharide)?
4. Which test substance did not test positive for any of the organic compounds?
5. What is the purpose of using distilled water as one of your test substances?

Conclusion
Restate the purpose of the lab in your own words. What is the monomer of a carbohydrate? Lipid? Protein? What do these macromolecules have in common? How do they differ? Suppose your brown lunch bag has a large, translucent spot on the bottom. What explanation could you give for this occurrence? A very thin slice is removed from a peanut and treated with Sudan IV stain. Then a drop of Biuret reagent is added to the peanut slice. When you examine the peanut slice under a microscope, patches of red and blue-violet are visible. What conclusions can you draw from your examination?
