John Steinbeck is one of the most widely read American writers. He spent much time of his life writing about the common people of the world. He wrote about everyday men and women with common struggles.

Question: What in Steinbeck's life would have caused him to tell the world about farmers, laborers, strikers and fishermen?

Create a time-line of events in Steinbeck's life which can explain what influenced
him to devote his life to writing about the characters he wrote about. You can use the below listed web sites, or you can use standard library resources such as biographies and encyclopedias to research John Steinbeck's background and life. Select things you believe influenced him the most.

Assignment #3 - Write a two paragraph essay.

There are many symbols in modern day life For example $ is a symbol for money. ZZZZZ is a symbol for sleeping, a light bulb symbolizes an idea. John Steinbeck used a lot of symbols in his writing of The Pearl. In the first few pages of the book the child is bitten by a scorpion. Why a scorpion? Kino finds a pearl. What could a pearl symbolize?

Write a two Paragraph Essay. Choose either the scorpion or the pearl and explain why you think Steinbeck chose to use these particular items in his story, The Pearl.

You could use a clustering/brainstorming technique to organize your ideas about symbols. What is the importance of using objects as symbols?
