Miss Lauritzen - Health

Chatsworth Charter High School

[email protected]

This semester, we will cover the basics of health.  We will look at ways to protect and improve physical, mental, emotional, and social health.  That instruction will include developing a healthy lifestyle, avoiding hazardous substances, establishing healthy relationships, understanding diseases and disorders, and human development and sexuality.  Information on the teaching of the reproductive system is in the LAUSD Parent/Student Handbook.  If you wish to have your child opt out of this instruction or view the materials, please contact me by November 1st.

Supplies:

It is highly recommended that students have paper and either a pen or pencil in class every day.  A spiral notebook where they can keep their work is helpful because they are less likely to lose anything.  Students should have their Chromebooks in class every day.  All work will be submitted online through Schoology.   Chromebooks should be charged the night before.  If necessary, there are a few outlets that can be used for charging at the back of the room.  Students will have to provide their own chargers.  Chromebooks will frequently be used in class, but they must be closed completely when asked to do so.

Class Rules:

  1. Masks are highly recommended at all times. They should fully cover the nose and mouth.
  2. Always be honest. Cheating of any kind is not acceptable.
  3. No eating, or chewing gum in class. Only water may be drunk in class.  No other beverages are allowed.
  4. Follow the district cell phone policy which states that phones are not to be used during school hours.
  5. Earbuds and headphones are not to be worn in class.
  6. No makeup or hairspray in class.
  7. Be in your seat and ready to learn when the bell rings.
  8. You are dismissed by the instructor, not the bell.
  9. Bring your paper, pencils, and pens to class every day.
  10. Keep the classroom clean. Please check for trash around your desk before you leave.
  11. Be courteous to your teacher and your classmates.
  12. Always exhibit proper classroom behavior:

            No swearing

            No rudeness

            No talking back

            No shouting

            No disrespect shown to anyone

Treat others as you would like to be treated.

Cell Phones:

The district cell phone policy states that phones are not to be used during the school day.  Therefore, they need to be placed on silent or turned off before students enter the room.  Upon entering the room, they will be placed in the designated containers at the back the room.  Phones can be retrieved at the end of the period.  Twenty charging ports will be available on a first come first serve basis.  Students will have to provide their own charging cables and adaptors.

Cheating:

Students are never allowed to copy someone else's work.  Students are never allowed to give their work to another student.  They can help their classmates if they need help, but should never email them their work or let them copy it.  Allowing another student to cheat is cheating.  If two students turn in the same work, both students will get a zero on the assignment and a U on the report card.  I would rather have students turn in a late assignment or never turn in an assignment at all than have them cheat on an assignment.

Grading Policy:

The grade received in this class will be earned by the student and the student alone.  Grades are earned, not given.  Grades in this course will be determined by an evaluation of homework, classwork, quizzes, and tests.  Class discussion is also very important.  Work must be turned in on time to be eligible for an A.  Each assignment will have a point value assigned to it.  At the end of each grading period, the number of points earned will be added and a percentage of the possible points will be calculated.  Parents, please sign up for Schoology on the Parent Portal.  Please check Schoology regularly to see how your child is doing in the class.

The point scale is as follows:

90% - 100%                A

80% - 89%                   B

65% - 79%                   C

50% - 64%                   D

Less than 50%          Fail

Work Habits:

Will be determined by the amount of tardies, missing assignments, and late work that a student has.  Work habits will also be affected by how well the student stays on task and completes work during class.

Cooperation:

Will be determined by classroom behavior and the ability to follow directions.  Excessive tardies will result in a U in both Work Habits and Cooperation.

Make up work:

It is the student’s job to find out what work was missed during an absence.  After an absence, work can be made up at home.  Check with the teacher for due dates.  All work will be posted on Schoology so it can be checked daily if someone is absent.  Quizzes will be given weekly.  Students must take the quiz in class.  If a student is not in the room at the time of the quiz and the quiz is missed, the next quiz score will be used in its place.

Opportunities for Improving the Grade:

One day each week, students will be allowed to come in during lunch to retake the quiz from the previous week.  This will give students another chance to show that they have learned the material and will give them a chance to improve the score on that quiz.

All missing assignments can be turned in at any point in the semester.  Since students can always turn in any of their missing work, there is no excuse for any student to not complete their work and pass the class.

Health is a required course.  Students who do not pass health class, will be required to repeat it in order to graduate from high school.
