About Me...

Hello parents and students! I'm Mr. Cuevas. I teach U.S. History and Ethnic Studies. I hold both a single subject, social-science credential and a mild to moderate special education credential.

History was always my favorite subject in high school and college, and I always knew that one day I would be sharing my passion with others-- so I became a teacher.  As I tell my students, learning about our history is super important, not only because you get to learn from the mistakes and successes of others, but because it allows you to learn about where you and your family came from.

In my classes, I focus on teaching students how to think critically as well as how to examine and analyze historical documents for the purpose of investigating the past, and trying to find accuracy within those stories from the past. I encourage research, but also teach students how to navigate a technological world that makes it fairly easy to be deceived.  And so, I make sure to teach 21st century skills that students will need in order to be successful in the "real world."

In addition to the academic courses that I teach, I'm also one of the head coaches of our school's Cross Country team. Cross Country is a fall sport that consists of an open air, natural terrain, 3 mile race against other schools from the San Fernando Valley.  Meets are always held at Pierce College.  Our team is fun, vibrant and student-athletes will testify that we feel more like a family than a team. Student-athletes are expected to practice every day during 6th period and for an hour after school.  It is a tough sport, but very rewarding as well-- not to mention a great way to get or stay in shape.
