After School Program Helps Students Prepare for College

By America Rojas
Editor-in-Chief

College Bound is a free afterschool tutoring program, sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club, that offers SAT prep and homework help to students of all grade levels. The program is offered from 2:45 to 5:00 everyday in Z195.
The purpose of the club is to help students graduate as well as to prepare them for college. Students are taught how to apply for financial aid and scholarships and receive tips for taking college entrance exams and filling out college applications.
Junior Cristina Teves, who consistently goes to the club, stated, “The counselors really help me and the workshops are really informative.”
However, despite the focus being college readiness, the program also teaches students the skills they will need if they decide not to attend college. Workshops that teach students how to complete job applications and write resumes are offered along with the college readiness workshops.
This is the second year this program is offered on campus to Chatsworth students. The counselors believe this program is very beneficial to all students, whether they plan on going to college or not. The College Bound Coordinator for CCHS, Karina Medrano, stated, “It’s meant to help all students graduate and achieve their goals after high school. I think that it creates a space for students to learn that they can go to college, even if they think they can’t.”
