Course Description:
This competency-based course is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions into the health care industry. This is a preparatory course for the EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) program. The course takes students on a fascinating journey beginning with history, future, and components of the emergency system, the well-being of the first responders, legal issues, medical terminology, and abbreviations. The course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the human body. These concepts are solidifying the foundational knowledge for specific medical emergencies. The course also gives students a genuine context for the application of the knowledge used to help patients in the field. The course begins with basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, first aid, CPR, and safety practices and ends with a thorough understanding of medical emergencies. The course presents the tools for students to understand the importance of prehospital care and delivers a thorough understanding of the proper use of medical equipment necessary to provide appropriate care. The competencies in this course are aligned with the National Standard Curriculum, Common Core State Standards, and the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards.
