Medical Careers Academy
More than a
Small Learning Academy
The new Medical Careers Academy at Chatsworth High School, is a small learning academy beginning in September of 2008. Although it will be in its first year of running, the planning and work behind the academy has been in process for many years. Our teachers have spent countless hours planning, researching and developing what they feel is the best in the Small Learning Academy business. Although small learning academies have been functioning in LAUSD for sometime now, the initial philosophy and design for this academy were created by Health teacher Brian Rooney. Mr. Rooney served as a medic in Vietnam. He brings his experiences and wisdom to every meeting never letting us forget that as educators we serve a much larger purpose than just teaching, but as mentors we are responsible for molding young minds to become productive adults.

Looking for Careers in
the Medical Field
There is a huge misconception that students enrolled in CHS’s Medical Careers Academy will be groomed to become doctors. On the contrary, medical academy students will be exposed to all aspects of the medical profession. Through a carefully designed curriculum, guest speakers, job shadowing, student research and additional high learning opportunities, students will be given the tools and taught the life skills necessary to make informative choices in regards to pursuing a career in the medical profession.

What’s in store for the
Medical Careers Academy Student
Chancellors in the Medical Careers Academy will be enrolled in a rigorous curriculum. Classes are designed to have the academy’s emphasis. Students will participate in lessons with real world applications. Core classes and electives will be centered around the medical profession bound Chancellor. The cliché of, “Why do I need to learn this?” will never be asked in these specially designed lessons. CHS’s Medical Academy teachers are always revisiting the curriculum to assure that all lessons meet California State Standards and help better prepare our Chancellors to succeed in state mandated tests. Every detail of the academy is in constant review to make this program the best that it can possibly be.

The program includes but is not limited to these opportunities:
  • Guest speakers from all aspects of the medical profession
  • A Medical Careers’ Academy Board consisting of community, parents, staff, teachers and students
  • AP on-line courses
  • New courses never offered at Chatsworth High School before
  • On-site college courses
  • Job shadowing
  • Field trips
  • Club affiliation opportunities
  • Parent Involvement
  • Award assemblies
  • Speakers from medical universities both private and public
  • Tutoring
  • Mentoring
  • Certificate at graduation
